“The Providence Journal and United Way of Rhode Island have partnered to highlight the state’s nonprofits. Each week, a nonprofit identified by the United Way will be spotlighted in the Providence Sunday Journal, and the United Way will share how they support that organization.

This week, we feature One Neighborhood Builders, which develops “affordable housing and engages neighbors across Greater Providence to cultivate safe, healthy, and vibrant communities.”

We asked Vice President of Resource Development & Communications Kyle McKendall to tell us more about the organization.

What is One Neighborhood Builders’ mission and vision?

As a nonprofit community development leader in Rhode Island, we’ve been at the forefront of the fight to expand affordable housing and foster healthier and more equitable communities for more than 36 years. Our mission to improve lives by building homes and connecting communities is what guides our work. An organization founded to address foreclosed and abandoned properties in Olneyville has evolved to respond to the needs of the community and the state’s housing crisis. We envision a Rhode Island where everyone can access and maintain affordable housing, and are developing housing in Central Falls, Cumberland, East Providence and Providence. […]

What are your biggest challenges currently?

Funding for affordable housing developments is the most pressing issue we, and all nonprofit affordable housing developers, face. Dedicated, permanent funding sources for affordable housing are limited in Rhode Island. The federally funded Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program is a primary source of funds for affordable housing in the state. However, these funds are competitive, and requests far exceed available funds each year. […]

How can volunteers or donors get involved?

A gift to One Neighborhood Builders is a pledge to do what you can to address the housing crisis in a meaningful way. As we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a donation is tax-deductible and has a direct impact on our ability to do this work. Donations can be made online at oneneighborhoodbuilders.org or mailed to 66 Chaffee St., Providence, RI 02909. Every gift, of any size, allows our team to show up each day to help the communities we serve. Additionally, you can advocate for policy changes that promote affordable housing and health equity in the city or town you live in and at the State House. Engaging in local discussions and supporting initiatives that align with our mission amplifies our efforts to create lasting change. Follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and X, and subscribe to our email newsletters to stay up to date with what we’ve got going on.
