PROVIDENCE − A long-vacant lot at the corner of Atwells Avenue and Knight Street, across from the towering Church of the Holy Ghost, is on its way to becoming 39 income-restricted apartments.

Nonprofit developer ONE Neighborhood Builders ceremonially broke ground on the site Friday during a brief pause in the construction that started a month prior.

When construction is complete, the mix of apartments with between one and three bedrooms will house an estimated 70 people.

Empty lots are often viewed as missing teeth in a neighborhood, but the lot, right before Atwells crosses over the highway, is more like a missing front tooth, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said.

“It’s been a lost opportunity for years,” he said

 

The project, dubbed The Avenue, bundled the new apartment building at 434 Atwells Ave. with the renovation of 46 apartments, spread across 13 buildings, in Elmwood, for the total $32 million price tag.

The apartment building costs $21.8 million, while the renovation of the Elmwood units is $10.8 million.

ONE Neighborhood Builders CEO Jennifer Hawkins said they tied the two projects together to have a better chance at being awarded the scarce state funding dollars available…
