Public Restrooms Open at Providence’s Merino Park Thanks to Participatory Budgeting Initiative Led by One Neighborhood Builders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 17, 2025 Providence, RI—One Neighborhood Builders (ONB), one of the state’s leading nonprofit affordable housing developers and community development corporations, in partnership with the City of Providence Parks Department, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of public restrooms in the city’s Merino Park. The installation of public restrooms at the park is a direct response to a community identified need during the Nine Neighborhood Fund participatory budgeting initiative led by ONB’s Central Providence Unidos, a Health Equity Zone and place-based initiative focused on increasing economic mobility and health equity in the nine neighborhoods…

We are excited to provide a summer construction update on the progress we've made at The Avenue and Broad Street Homes!  The Avenue   Located in Providence, The Avenue combines the re-syndication of 46 affordable apartments in the Elmwood neighborhood, referred to as Elmwood Neighborhood Revitalization II (ENR II), with the construction of 39 new affordable apartments on Atwells Avenue, known as The Avenue.   ENR II encompasses 46 apartments scattered throughout 13 buildings. Providence Journal: How the central Providence community made public bathrooms in their parks a priority

By News Coverage

When children play at their local parks, they are often provided with an abundance of free green space, playground equipment, ballfields and basketball courts, yet no place to go to the bathroom.

In response to community feedback, the Providence Parks Department and One Neighborhood Builders began adding these amenities with the opening of sustainable public bathrooms in Merino Park on July 17.

One Neighborhood Builders’ Central Providence Unidos launched a participatory budgeting initiative in 2022 where central Providence residents voted on the installation of public restrooms in their parks.
