Highlights of the Center City Apartments Groundbreaking

We were proud to gather alongside partners, neighbors, and local leaders to break ground on Center City Apartments, our largest development to date. This long-awaited project will transform a once-blighted site into a vibrant community with 144 affordable homes, thoughtful amenities, and dedicated supportive services for the families who need them most. Below are some highlights and reflections from the day as we celebrated this milestone together and looked ahead to the work still to come.

One Neighborhood Builders Breaks Ground on Center City Apartments in East Providence; Largest Development to Date

One Neighborhood Builders (ONB), one of the state’s leading nonprofit affordable housing and community development organizations, announced it has secured a $3 million loan from the Rhode Island Foundation to fully fund phase one of its Center City Apartments (CCA) development in East Providence.

This fall, the 02908 Merchants Collective hosted its inaugural public event, the Taste of 02908, celebrating the vibrant local community and its small businesses. Held at Davis Park, the event brought together dozens of food vendors, nonprofit organizations, and community partners, creating a lively, family-friendly atmosphere that showcased the neighborhood’s diversity and strong sense of pride. Families enjoyed delicious offerings from local restaurants, while children took part in fun games, activities, and character visits. East Bay RI: Taunton Avenue project provides blueprint for better affordable housing

By the early spring of 2027, if all goes to plan, a formerly blighted stretch of one of East Providence’s most central, downtown corridors will open its doors as an example of the possibilities that exist when creative minds and altruistic organizations work together to combat the state’s significant affordable housing problem.

But the road to get to this point, and indeed the road left to be traveled, also underscores a troubling reality facing nonprofit developers; who make it their mission to build truly affordable housing at a rate that will make an actual difference in the lives of the thousands of people who need it, and without steamrolling residents in the process.

PBN: One Neighborhood Builders gets $3M loan from Rhode Island Foundation for apartment development

Published by PBN Staff, 10/1/25   EAST PROVIDENCE – One Neighborhood Builders has secured a $3 million loan from the Rhode Island Foundation for the first phase of its Center City Apartments development in the city. The loan announced Wednesday allows the nonprofit to secure financing for the first 95 apartments of the 144-unit development spanning three buildings along Taunton Avenue.
