Steeple & Stone, ONE|NB’s proposed 66-home affordable housing development in Cumberland, was among 31 recipients of housing and community development grants announced Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023 by the state, Gov. Dan McKee, and the Rhode Island Department of Housing.
Steeple & Stone will include the adaptive reuse of St. Patrick Church, creating 44 new apartments. Overall 10 apartments will be reserved for older adults (62+), ensuring opportunities for residents aging in place and in social service partnership with PACE Organization of Rhode Island.
Fourteen cities and towns were awarded $5.9 million as part of the Community Development Block Grant program announced Tuesday. The program targets municipalities that don’t receive similar grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“It is our hope that this set of investments will position these Rhode Island communities to foster vibrant neighborhoods, develop and preserve needed housing, and promote economic growth,” said Secretary of Housing Stefan Pryor. “We are grateful to Governor McKee and Rhode Island’s Congressional delegation for these valuable resources.”
The grant for Steeple & Stone was $300,000 to be used for the adaptive reuse of the church building and rectory. Overall, grants ranged from $5,000 to $750,000.
