The Providence Journal: Former East Providence nursing home is being transformed into housing

EAST PROVIDENCE – In the steel shell of a former dormitory and, more recently, nursing home, water collects in buckets as construction crews hammer and drill, saw and weld, and heavy machinery works to cover a series of underground water retention systems, consisting of huge pipes.
Next door, the masonry elevator shaft rises three stories above construction crews working on the first floor below. The two buildings are becoming 95 units of income-restricted housing, built by One Neighborhood Builders, in a partnership with Family Service of Rhode Island, Crossroads Rhode Island and Foster Forward.

PBN: ONE Neighborhood Builders shifts attention to Phase 2 in E.P. housing effort

ONE Neighborhood Builders is already moving forward on the next stage of its Center City Apartments project following the Dec. 8 groundbreaking for Phase 1 construction.

Kyle McKendall, vice president of resource development and communications, said ONB is now finalizing its submission to R.I. Housing’s annual Consolidated Funding Round that is due Dec. 18. The nonprofit is seeking support from several sources for Phase 2 of the project, including the 2026 round of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.

WPRI: East Providence breaks ground on 144-unit apartment complex

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Construction has officially kicked off on a new housing complex in East Providence.

Community members and city leaders gathered Monday morning for a groundbreaking at the future site of Center City Apartments (CCA) on Taunton Avenue.

Phase 1 of the project includes the first 95 apartments of the planned 144-unit development, which involves constructing new four-story building and renovating an existing four-story building.

PNB: Bristol County Savings Bank opens new lending center in Providence

Bristol County Savings Bank has opened a new Community Lending Center on Broad Street, marking its first major expansion in the city as the bank tries to deepen its reach in Rhode Island’s lending market.

The bank held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 6 at the 359 Broad St. office, which sits inside the Rhode Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce headquarters. As part of the event, the bank’s charitable foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to One Neighborhood Builders, the Providence-based affordable housing developer.

By the early spring of 2027, if all goes to plan, a formerly blighted stretch of one of East Providence’s most central, downtown corridors will open its doors as an example of the possibilities that exist when creative minds and altruistic organizations work together to combat the state’s significant affordable housing problem.

But the road to get to this point, and indeed the road left to be traveled, also underscores a troubling reality facing nonprofit developers; who make it their mission to build truly affordable housing at a rate that will make an actual difference in the lives of the thousands of people who need it, and without steamrolling residents in the process.
